How Many Trips to India Do NZ Patients Need for Dental Implants?
- The two-visit protocol exists because of osseointegration, the biological process by which titanium fuses with bone.
It takes 4–6 months to complete.
Visit Requirements by Treatment Type
| Treatment | First Visit | Second Visit | Total Hyderabad Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-on-4 both arches | 10–14 days | 5–7 days (4–6 months later) | 15–21 days |
| All-on-6 both arches | 10–14 days | 5–7 days | 15–21 days |
| Zygomatic classic both arches | 12–16 days | 5–7 days | 17–23 days |
| Single arch (All-on-4 or All-on-6) | 10–14 days | 5–7 days | 15–21 days |
| Full mouth rehabilitation (complex) | 14–18 days | 7–10 days | 21–28 days |
| Single implant + crown | 7–10 days | None (immediate) or 3–5 days (crown) | 7–15 days |
| 8 e.max veneers | 5–7 days | None | 5–7 days |

Why Two Visits for Full-Arch Implant Cases?
The two-visit protocol exists because of osseointegration, the biological process by which titanium fuses with bone. It takes 4–6 months to complete.
First visit: Implant fixtures are placed. A provisional fixed bridge (monolithic acrylic or PMMA) is delivered on the day of surgery if torque threshold is met (86.5% of cases). You return to NZ with functional teeth.
Integration interval: 4–6 months in NZ. Bone grows around the implant surface. The provisional bridge protects the implant while load is controlled.
Second visit: Osseointegration is confirmed on arrival CBCT. The provisional bridge is removed. Final impressions are taken digitally. The final monolithic zirconia bridge is fabricated in-house (2 days) and seated. You return to NZ with final restorations.
The reason the two visits are separated by months, not weeks, is that placing final prosthetic load before osseointegration is complete significantly increases implant failure risk.

The Single Extended Visit Option
Patients who want to eliminate the second trip can stay 17–21 days on their first visit. This compresses both the surgery recovery and the final bridge fabrication into one extended stay.
How it works: Surgery on Day 3. Provisional bridge delivered same day. Recovery Days 4–8. At approximately Day 17–21, if healing has progressed as expected, the provisional is replaced with the final zirconia bridge before departure.
Limitation: This does not eliminate the osseointegration wait, it uses the same 10–14 day provisional period but delivers a final bridge at the earliest clinically appropriate point. The final bridge at 17 days is placed over a provisional integration phase, not a completed 4–6 month osseointegration. Most clinical evidence favours the standard two-visit protocol for highest long-term success rates.
Some cases are not appropriate for single-visit protocol, your treating clinician will advise.

Travel Cost Comparison: One vs Two Visits
The single extended visit saves travel cost but requires longer time away from NZ on one trip. The decision depends on the patient's work and availability situation.
| Scenario | First Visit Travel | Second Visit Travel | Total Travel Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-visit standard protocol (AKL) | ~NZD 2,400–3,400 (flights + hotel) | ~NZD 1,800–2,600 (flights + hotel) | ~NZD 4,200–6,000 |
| Single extended visit (AKL) | ~NZD 3,800–5,200 (longer stay) | None | ~NZD 3,800–5,200 |

Combining the Trip with Hyderabad Tourism
Recovery allows light activity from Day 5–6 post-surgery. Hyderabad has significant cultural and historical sites within easy reach:
- Charminar (4 km), 16th century mosque and monument, centre of the old city
- Golconda Fort (11 km), 16th century fortress complex, 45-minute visit
- Hussain Sagar Lake (5 km), large central lake with Buddha statue
- Ramoji Film City (30 km), world's largest integrated film studio complex (UNESCO World Records)
- Salar Jung Museum (5 km), one of India's largest museums
Post-surgical patients are advised against strenuous activity, heat exposure, and crowded environments for the first 7 days. Light sightseeing from Day 8 is typically appropriate.
