Is KiwiSaver Release for Dental Legal?
Yes. The Inland Revenue's Compassionate Release of KiwiSaver provisions allow early access for medical treatment - including dental - that cannot be reasonably obtained in New Zealand, or where the cost would cause severe financial hardship. Full mouth implant cases frequently qualify.
Eligibility Criteria
You must be experiencing severe financial hardship, OR the treatment is not reasonably available in New Zealand at a cost you can afford, OR the dental condition is causing significant impairment to your health or capacity to work. Each application is assessed individually by the Inland Revenue.
Documents Required
1. A letter from a registered dentist or specialist confirming the treatment is medically necessary. 2. A formal written treatment quote (from New Zealand and/or overseas provider). 3. How Long Does Approval Take?
The Inland Revenue typically processes compassionate release applications within 10–21 business days of receiving all documents. Super funds then release funds within 5–10 business days of Inland Revenue approval. Allow 4–6 weeks total from application to funds received.
How Much Can You Release?
There is no dollar cap on compassionate release for medical treatment - the amount approved corresponds to the documented treatment cost. You can apply for the exact cost of your treatment including reasonable travel expenses if treating overseas.
Overseas Treatment and Super
Treating overseas (including at Stunning Dentistry in India) does not disqualify you from compassionate release. The Inland Revenue considers whether treatment is 'reasonably available in New Zealand' - given the massive cost difference for identical treatment, overseas applications frequently meet this threshold.
